FAYETTEVILLE, W.Va - Nestled on Court Street in downtown Fayetteville, the Cathedral Cafe has been a part of the community for a long time, most recently as the cafe, but first as a church more than 100 years ago.
"The church itself was built in 1905. It ceased to be a church in the mid-80s. It sat basically as storage for the better part of two decades, maybe," said Jenny Varuska, who works at the cafe.
And now it's received a new life of its own as a popular spot for local and tourists alike, just about two miles from the New River Gorge Bridge. The restaurant has a little bit of everything from coffee ground to order, to soups made from scratch to breakfast options to help to get your morning started right.
"We start serving breakfast 7:30 every morning. Our coffee comes from a company called equal exchange. It's all fair-trade. It's fabulous coffee. It's really exciting to get their new products in sometimes," Varuska said.
While the coffee may come from fair trade farmers around the world, it's one of the few things there that does. The Cathedral Cafe tries to focus on eating locally as much as possible, using those ingredients to make everything from some of the three soups they make each day to a staff-favorite meal that doesn't disappoint guests either.
"We source our chorizo locally, so the chorizo breakfast burrito is killer. I like the carnivore frittata, I'm a meat-eater, so anything full of meat and cheese basically makes me happy," said Varuska.
The Cathedral Cafe is open seven days a week from 7:30 to 4:00.
