Fairmont City Council and Marion County Commission could agree to form a metro government and consolidate services in the area.
Story by Sarah Kapis
In the last session, the state legislature passed a bill making it easier for towns in West Virginia to combine their services.
"They wanted the chamber to look at ways to consolidate services and ways to make Marion County grow, so we looked at metro government," said President of the Marion County Chamber of Commerce, Tina Shaw.
Metro government would mean Marion County and the biggest city within the county, Fairmont, would join to form one governing body.
With that move comes cost savings and the option for consolidation of services like water, police and fire units.
"This would not eliminate their positions," said County Commissioner Cody Starcher, "But would be included in the whole ball of wax to where they would be taking orders from a superior."
But first, a charter review committee made up of various community members would be created to investigate this government for one year.
Leaders say the allure is total flexibility. "You can make metro government whatever you want, that's the beauty of it," said Shaw.
"You might have Fairmont and Marion County forming a government entity and if some municipalities want to be a part they could, or if they didn't, they wouldn't have to," said Councilman Tom Mainella.
But nothing is for certain, the charter will be presented to the voters and they will have the final say.
