12News hops a ride on the New Tygart Valley Flyer for a trip to the High Falls of the Cheat.
Story by J. Turchetta
ELKINS -- It is an awesome sight - a 50-year-old diesel locomotive pulling into downtown Elkins. It's as if you have stepped back in time. The passengers are lining up by the bus load to board the trains.
Right now, the trains run once during the week and then on the weekends. The Old Elkins Depot, is once again alive with activity, from folks buying their train tickets to souvenirs at the gift shop.
As we board the train you get a sense of nostalgia, not just from the vintage train cars, but just being on a train all together. Almost as soon as the train pulled into the station it was time to begin our trip to the High Falls of the Cheat.
Some of the folks on the trip included a tour group of retired rail road workers and some folks who just wanted to have a relaxing day of fun.
The excursion trains have been coming to the High Falls of the Cheat since 1999, but its only been in the last two weeks that the trains have been coming into Elkins.
The ride through the mountains of Randolph County is almost as beautiful as our destination. The High Falls of the cheat really are a sight to behold.
The four-hour trip was over all too soon, and before you knew it, we were pulling back into the Elkins depot.
We took our trip aboard the New Tygart Flyer, but other trains and rides are also available.
