WVU Healthcare launches $90 million investment improving health information technology.

Story by Courtney Dunn

MORGANTOWN  -- Technology is changing health care at many local hospitals.

New computer-aided techniques and electronic records taking the place paper files.

WVU Healthcare launched its new project a few days ago.

Kevin Halbritter is the Vice President of Medical Affairs and Epic Leader for WVU Healthcare.

He says three words "quality, safety, efficiency" characterize what WVU Healthcare's new program means for patients.

It's named Merlin.

And like the wizard it's named after, it's transforming medical care.

The program pulls hospital charts and communication together and puts the information at physicians fingertips.

"The biggest thing this probably means for us is it really allows us to access patient information quickly and efficiently," said Physician Ron Pellegrino.

Which will have a big impact on patients.

Right now they're used to seeing rubber gloves and blood pressure cuffs in exam rooms.

But soon computers will be everywhere, providing easier access to their medical records.

"We're using a computer to help improve the quality and safety of care that we deliver," Halbritter said.

In the near future patients will be able to access their full medical records online.

Something physicians say will be a big benefit to patient health.

"One of the things that we hear from patients all the time is that they want to be a bigger part of the process," Pellegrino said, "and sometimes you feel like you're on the outside looking in. With something like this it lets people be a bigger participant in their own heath care which is quite helpful in the long run."
