ATVs may be fun to ride but now some Preston County residents say they're causing a stir in the area.
Story by Katherine Jones
Just one year ago the first law regulating ATVs went into effect. Ironically this law bans people from operating A-T-Vs on paved roads. Now the problem is that some ATV riders are choosing to ride on the rail trails.
The rail trails is a place where a lot of cyclists, runners and people who just want to enjoy a quiet walk go. At the entrance of the rail trails you'll find several signs stating where any motor vehicles are prohibited.
Those who disobey the restriction find themselves driving others off the trail-the ones who are permitted to go in these areas. So you can just imagine what happens in a situation where an ATV is on the rail trail near a cyclist or pedestrian.
This year alone at least 10 people have died in ATV related accidents in West Virginia. A record of 32 people were killed in ATV accidents last year. 150 thousand West Virginians ride or own ATVs.
Vice President of the Mon River Trails Conservancy says that Monongalia County nipped the A-T-V problem in the bud by making an arrest and spreading the word that disobeying the signs would not be tolerated. Hopefully this will be an example for other ATV riders to play it safe and follow the rules.
