ELKINS -- The Senior Center says so far, it's been a success.
"Oh it's very convenient. I really like it because you don't have to get out if you're not able to walk in and it's so convenient," says Patty Bennett, a senior who uses the drive-thru service.
Bennett is one of the many seniors using the Randolph County Senior Center's drive-by meal program. Seniors call ahead, drive up the alleyway, ring the doorbell, and food is delivered to their car. Bennett describes why she likes to pick up food for herself and a friend.
"She's not that good at walking right now. And at least she gets a home-cooked meal," says Bennett.
Senior center officials say that's the main idea: to provide a nutritious meal to those unable to eat at the center itself because of health reasons, or because they're still working and don't have time.
"It's a nice healthy meal. I can run down - I only have a half hour lunch. I can run down, get my meal and go back to work and eat," says Jennifer Moats, a senior who uses the drive-thru service.
Volunteers say the program helps keep seniors healthy.
"It's really good for them because then they will know that they have a nice decent meal to eat. At least once a day," says Byron Kangas, a senior center volunteer.
"It helps us stay healthy and we get all of the nutrition and vitamins we need," says Bennett.
The drive-thru pilot program will wrap up at the end of the month. The senior center says the West Virginia Commission on Aging will review the program and determine whether to continue it in the future.
