MORGANTOWN -- Things could be looking up when it comes to traffic in Morgantown.
Officials have broken ground for the $16-million intermodal transportation center on the campus of West Virginia University.
A facility that Hugh Kierig, WVU Director of Transportation and Parking says will change mobility on and off campus for years to come.
WVU students agree.
"It will definately benefit students especially the ones that have to drive in from places like the Ridge and College Park," says Taylor Richmond.
The facility will be built right down the hill from the health science center near the existing PRT station.
Its been a long time coming but it is just another good example of when you work together to find the right solution and it was a very good working relationship in the process," says Morgantown Mayor Ron Justice.
Officials say the facility being built will be more than just a parking garage, but a 7,000 square foot intermodal transportation facility that will give people more options when it comes to traveling in Morgantown.
The new facility will have bus terminals, bus waiting areas, bicycle storage, and shower facilities for bicyclist. Also in the plan is a 500-space parking garage that includes a direct connection garage to the PRT.
"It's going to be a wonderful opportunity for people to transfer easily from one mode to the next," says Kierig.
"I think it will be a win-win situation for not only people driving cars but also people that choose other forms of transportation."
The transportation hub is expected to be completed by fall of 2009.
