MORGANTOWN -- The United Way of Monongalia and Preston Counties raised almost one and a half million dollars in its last campaign. And tonight it held a "Toast and Roast" to thank the businesses and organizations that helped make 2009's campaign so successful.

The United Way honored more than 50 companies, institutions, and organizations for their heartfelt contributions in 2008.

But that's only the toast.

The non-profit organization also said goodbye to its director of more than 17 years - and that's where the roast comes in.

$1,460,000 raised by area organizations and businesses selfless enough to give for the good of others. "The generosity of the institutions and organizations of Monongalia and Preston Counties is superlative," said Steve Walker, last year's Campaign Chair. "They all have come together to help those who are most in need in our community."

The United Way honored them tonight with plaques commemorating their donations and achievements.

West Virginia University was named the Best of the Best for contributing the largest amount.

"WVU really has a strong commitment to the United Way and this year's campaign was proof of that," said Brett White, representing WVU. "We worked very hard and the students got involved. We raised over $270,000 this year."

And introducing the new United Way Director for Monongalia and Preston Counties: Tina Zeff.

"Well, first I just need a day or two to enjoy it." said Zeff, "But once we get started, we're going to hit the road running."

Before handing over total responsibility, the group said goodbye to its past director, Jena Prokopchuk ...with song, dance, and lots of laughs.

"We really appreciate her tenure of 17 1/2 years, and we wish her luck where ever she may go," said Zeff.
