It will alert residents when disasters happen.

CHEAT LAKE  -- The Monongalia County Office of Emergency Management has installed a new siren to alert residents in emergencies.

Officials tested the siren, located in the Cheat Lake area off Exit 10 on Interstate 68, Wednesday afternoon.

Emergency officials say residents need to be aware of what it means if the siren goes off.

"We only use the siren to notify residents in case of an emergency," said Deputy Director Michael Wolfe, "and those type of emergencies the siren would be used for is an evacuation of your home or a shelter in place. So it's a very critical situation that could save a life."

Wolfe says the Office of Emergency Management will test the siren at 11:00 a.m. on the first Saturday of every month.

If it goes off any other time, residents should tune into 12 News or turn on the radio to listen for emergency announcements.

I understand your concern. i wondered the same until I asked the officials about it. Basically they said it is intended to warn the OUTDOOR public and not intended to be heard indoors. They mentioned that there were other means for indoor warning (radio, tv)...anyway, that was their answer.

I like the idea but I think they should go ahead and put up more than one around Cheat Lake, so that it's heard all over town. JMHO

As a resident of Cheat Lake, I am certainly appreciative that they replaced the siren; however, I was at home, less than one mile from the location of the siren, and I could barely hear it. I noticed that they seemed to adjust the volume up once but it was still difficult to hear. If I had been cooking or cleaning or my children had been awake playing, instead of me sitting at my computer in a quiet house, I would not have heard it at all. I can hear the fire whistle with no problems at all - day or night, but I worry that I will not hear the siren and awake if there would be an emergency in the middle of the night or early morning hours. I also wonder how well the siren can be heard by residents in Cheat Lake who live further from the siren and hope that it can serve its intended purpose - to warn us in the event of an adverse situation which could be life threatening.
