SHINNSTON -- The authorities say a Lincoln High School student who may have contracted bacterial meningitis is in stable condition. The girl is still undergoing tests to confirm the diagnosis.

Health officials have been working with friends and family on the student and are urging anyone that could have had contact with the student to get the vaccine. In the meantime, the Harrison-Clarksburg Health Department says it gave out about 20 vaccines on Thursday. It received a shipment of 600 vaccines Thursday afternoon and will distribute them for free to students and faculty members on Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the office on Main Street in Clarksburg.

Students must of accompanied by a parent and bring their vaccination records.

A definitive diagnosis of bacterial meningitis cannot be confirmed in ANY patient until cultures are positive for the bacteria, this takes several days. The news media cannot report a case of bacterial meningitis as anything but "probable" until it has been confirmed through cultures. Welcome to the liable world we live in! This is why the news has to report it this way, if they reported this as a confirmed case, then they would be in violation of the law.

I'm so glad that this young lady is doing better, I wish her a full speedy recovery. I have heard so many rumors, which is sad for people to spread lies in a case like this. My main concern though is this, I've been told that there are 2 more students that have meningitis. My question is, is there any truth to this and if so, why has it not been reported? My children attend school in Lumberport and I think that even though we don't need to know who, we should know if this is true. My thoughts and prayers are still with the young lady.
