MORGANTOWN -- Less than 3 weeks ago the single largest federal tax rate hike in U.S. history went into affect causing one pack of cigarettes to go up 62 cents.
According to the West Virginia Division of Tobacco Prevention for the Bureau of Public Health, they've already seen a dramatic increase in the number of smokers calling the quitline.
"This tax has really helped out prompting me to look more towards quitting," says Morgantown resident David Hickman.
Many smokers have thought the same thing as Hickman.
The West Virginia Tobacco Quitline has seen an increase in recent months.
Calls coming in for people wanting help to quit smoking have increased from 20% to 39%.
"This is a significant increase in the tobacco quitline but it's positive," says Kevin Tephabock, Regional Executive Director for the American Cancer Society.
"Two things are happening, people are asking for help and looking for help and also if they're going to quit they're going to save money," says Tephabock.
Officials say, more important than money; is health.
Research shows that 20 minutes after you quit smoking your blood pressure and heart rate drops.
Three months after you quit smoking your circulation and lung function improves.
Experts say with the price of tobacco up and not going anywhere, now is a good time to kick the habit.
"This is a good time for a smoker to take control of their heath," says Tephabock.
"Ask for help, get the help that’s out there and provided to them because there are lots of resources out there to help people."
