Morgantown holds first ever I-D Theft Day at Morgantown Mall.

By J. Turchetta

Identity theft is can happen to anyone, but there are some ways to prevent it.

Local police and credit experts were in Morgantown Saturday to help teach people how to protect themselves.

We have all received those pre-approved credit card offers, and usually you rip it up, and toss it in the trash.

But according to law enforcement, tearing up those offers or other sensitive information, is not good enough.

Folks from all over North Central West Virginia brought all different types of old personal information or documents to the Morgantown Mall Saturday.

Edwards Document Destruction Company was on hand to take those documents, and shred them.

The Monongalia County Sheriff's Department, along with representatives from the Better Business Bureau and Consumer Credit Service were there to answer any questions.

The organizers of the event say shredding important documents is something everyone should do to protect themselves.

Organizers say this is just the first of many more I-D theft days.
