SAN FRANCISCO -- Former Bellaire High School and Ball State quarterback Nate Davis signed his first professional contract, when he inked a four-year deal with the San Francisco 49ers.
The terms of the deal have not yet been released, but Pressdemocrat.com reports that Davis’ contract included a $150,300 signing bonus.
Niners camp begins next weekend, and Davis is the fifth of seven San Francisco draft picks to sign so far.
Once camp begins, Shaun Hill and Alex Smith will vie for the starting quarterback job with Damon Huard and Davis likely battling for the third spot on the depth chart.
Davis was a fifth-round pick of San Francisco, after he left Ball State after his junior season, He won two MAC Offensive Player of the Year awards (2007,08), and became the first passer in school history to throw for over 3,000 yards in back-to-back seasons.
In his career in Muncie, Davis set school career records for touchdown passes (74), passing yards (9,233), passing attempts (1,124), pass completions (678), 250-yard passing games (20) and 300-yard passing games (9). His 74 career touchdown passes rank fifth in MAC history behind Chad Pennington and Ben Roethlisberger. Davis also compiled 499 rushing yards for 10 TDs while at Ball State.
Davis had a brilliant prep career at Bellaire, where he still holds several career and single-season records.
