MORGANTOWN -- When drivers are under the influence of alcohol, they might think they drive just fine, but a simulator in Morgantown Thursday proved them wrong.
The driving simulator was parked in front of WVU's Mountain Lair, where anyone was welcome to take a spin. Students from Morgantown High School visited the simulator as part of a class assignment.
A screen on the outside showed how the driver performed. The simulator converted a sober driver's reaction times to those of a drunk driver. Some drivers lasted less than two minutes before crashing.
"The simulator is able to demonstrate to change more than 400 different scenarios of drinking and driving, road conditions, speed and levels of alcohol in your system," says Ruth Kershner with WVU's Dept. of Community Medicine, "so it offers students a good non-alcoholic experience to see how depth perception changes and the dangers of drinking and driving."
Volunteers with that department also asked participants and passers-by to sign a pledge stating they would never drive under the influence.
