SMITHFIELD -- Assistant State Fire Marshal Mackey Ayersman has released the name of an elderly man killed in a fire at his home near Smithfield.
The Office of the Medical Examiner told Ayersman that Norman Oswald, 80, died from a heart attack as a result of the fire.
Oswald had previously suffered a heart attack and a stroke, according to Ayersman.
It appears that Oswald attempted to put the fire out, and tried to retrieve some of his gun collection, containing about 150 firearms, Ayersman said.
While the official cause of the fire has not yet been determined, Ayersman said the fire originated at a breaker box in a closet in Oswald's bedroom.
Firefighters found Oswald in that bedroom.
