MORGANTOWN -- More than 1,000 fans welcomed the Mountaineers home on Sunday afternoon. Fans were loud and proud, still excited over a last minute victory.
"Big East Champions, it doesn't get any better than that," said WVU Freshman Andrew Silba.
WVU's defeat of Georgetown on Saturday night was its first-ever Big East title and the school's first league tournament title of any kind since the 1984 Atlantic 10 title.
"This is a special place, you all make it special. So, I hope you'll understand how much we appreciate you," said Coach Bob Huggins.
Fans waited patiently for hours for the team to return after their flight from New York City was delayed.
"We love the Mountaineers, there's a lot to like about it, wonderful team, wonderful coaches, beast of the east," said Raymond Bodkins, of Morgantown.
The cheers and chants became louder as the team bus pulled into the coliseum and as players walked out with the Big East Trophy in-hand.
"It's great to be from the state of West Virginia, great to be a Mountaineer fan, was born in West Virginia, I just love it," said Barb Albers of Wheeling.
Forward John Flowers performed his own rendition of the Irish jig he made famous after the Notre Dame win.
Chants of "one more year" echoed while sophomore forward Devin Ebanks spoke to the crowd. This year, the Players know there's more work ahead in the NCAA tournament.
"I appreciate everything you guys do for us and all the support you have, we have six more to go," said Forward, Jonnie West.
The Mountaineers (27-6), received a No. 2 seed in the East Region and will play against Morgan State (27-9) on Friday at 12:15 p.m. in Buffalo, N.Y.
