JACKSON'S MILL -- Brianna Swiger, 13, used to suffer from asthma attacks. But for the last six years, she has learned how to deal with them every summer at Camp Catch Your Breath for asthmatic children in West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Virginia.
"A couple months ago I had a really bad asthma attack and everyone was freaking out except for me," she said. "I was calm... really, really calm."
The camp teaches children with asthma how to manage the disease. They learn about asthma attack triggers and how to use inhalers efficiently. Campers also receive nutritional education, since asthmatic children are more sedentary and can't exercise as much as regular children, according to director Sonny Hoskinson.
"This education helps them learn to manage their weight," he said.
The camp also provides a safe place for asthmatic children to safely partake in normal summer activities like arts and crafts, campfires and swimming.
"With all this we're trying to get them to realize they can participate in every activity that normal kids can as long as they control their asthma and manage it," Hoskinson said.
Camp Catch Your Breath takes place the week of July 26 at Jackson's Mill. This year marks the camp's 20th year.
