Four of the miners who died in the Sago Mine explosion lived in Barbour County. Now there's plans for a permanent memorial is planned.
Since the disaster that killed 12 miners, temporary memorials have been set up and torn down. A permanent one is in the works. The memorial is still in the planning stage, but folks around Philippi says it's about time something was done to memorialize those four miners.
Just two weeks ago, helmets were up to symbolize the four miners who died almost two months ago.
"It's important that we remember these miners and all miners," says Philippi resident Lars Bryne. "Barbour County has such a rich history of mining."
City officials are planning a more permanent memorial.
"We had a memorial for 9/11 built a couple of years ago," says memorial planning committe member Tammy Stemple. "When the accident happened we wanted to expand to include the Sago miners."
Stemple says they need your help. Send your design ideas to her at P.O. Box 460, Phillipi, West Virginia, 26416.
"They love their miners around here. They are great people. Brave people like an officer doing his duty," says resident Ron Alltop. "They are brave."
