A coal company in Josephine has hired an environmental consultant to help with the cleanup.

The state Department of Environmental Protection says 40,000 gallons of coal sludge spilled into Piney Creek Wednesday afternoon.
A DEP spokeswoman said the cause for the spill was operator error. It apperas a worker at White Mountain Mine cut a line while a sediment pond was being cleaned.
The company was issued a cessation order, mandating that the operation be shut down until the mess is cleaned up. The company has hired an environmental consultant to help with the cleanup effort.
A filter is being placed at the mouth of Pine's Branch to catch any sediment.
