Homecoming 2011 for Fairmont State University unfortunately didn't conclude with a victory for the football team at Duvall-Rosier Field in Fairmont. The Falcons struggled to score and fell to WVIAC opponent Concord 20-7.
The first quarter of the game went scoreless and in the second quarter FSU was driving when quarterback Logan Moore pitched the ball. No Falcon was there to catch it and Concord picked up the fumble, running it in for a touchdown. The Mountain Lions attempted a two-point conversion that failed, but it gave Concord the lead 6-0. Fairmont tried to respond with a 43-yard field goal, but Frank Keenan's kick fell short. Concord's next possession proved fruitful as quarterback Zach Grossi found Darrick Williams on a 60-yard touchdown pass. The Lions couldn't complete another extra point attempt, this one a kick, but CU still led FSU 12-0 heading into halftime.
The third quarter was scoreless exactly like the first but it included a missed field goal by Concord.
The Falcons finally got on the board in the fourth quarter. Moore kept the ball for a three-yard touchdown run. The successful extra point cut into Concord's lead, making the score 12-7. The Lions responded quickly, scoring three plays later on a drive that went 70 yards in just over one minute. This time, CU converted on the two-point attempt, moving the score to 20-7.
FSU actually outplayed Concord on offense, compiling 328 yards of total offense to CU's 274. Moore completed 24 of 42 passes for 200 yards. He threw one interception. The sophomore rushed for 90 yards and the one FSU touchdown. Star running back Daniel Monroe left the game in the second quarter with an injury, but managed 26 yards on eight carries. Chris St. Hilaire grabbed five catches for 33 yards. Tim Orange added 43 yards on four catches. Orange left the game on his own power after suffering an injury, very likely a broken arm, in the third quarter.
FSU's defense was led by Dewey McDonald who wrapped up eight tackles, six of them solo. David Pack had four tackles, two for loss, and forced a fumble. Justin Hughes grabbed his first interception of the season.
Fairmont State is now 6-3 on the season, 3-3 in WVIAC play. The Falcons play at WV State next Saturday.
