Glenville State took to the road Saturday, traveling to the University of Charleston for a WVIAC match up.
The Pioneers started off hot with a 96-yard opening kickoff return by Jakharie Murphy. The extra point was blocked by UC, but GSC quickly took a 6-0 lead. Charleston's first possession of the game was problematic for the Golden Eagles as they fumbled. The ball was recovered by Glenville's Kyle Warner and almost immediately turned into a touchdown as Derek McRae recorded a seven-yard scoring run. The score moved to 13-0 in favor of Glenville. Charleston responded in the first quarter, cutting the lead to 13-7.
UC scored again in the second quarter, taking the lead 14-3. That didn't last long as Glenville responded with a 23-yard field goal from Colston Bayless, taking the lead back 16-14. UC's ensuing possession began with 1:27 left on the second quarter clock, enough time for the Eagles to score. Five plays later a UC touchdown pass gave the Golden Eagles the lead back at 21-16 heading into the locker room.
The third quarter started out in Charleston's favor as it's first possession ended in a 56-yard scoring pass, extending the lead to 29-16 UC. With about 30 seconds left in the quarter, GSC scored again on a 10 yard touchdown pass from Darold Hughes to Jordan Griffin. That cut the lead to 29-23 UC.
The fourth quarter saw Charleston extend its lead first with a 44-yard field goal, moving the score to 32-23. A promising Pioneers drive was cut short when Hughes threw a pick six, moving the scoreboard to 39-23 in the Eagles favor. With 4:44 on the clock, Clarksburg native Griffin caught another touchdown pass, this one from three yards out. That put the Pioneers down just 10 points, 39-29. The high scoring fourth quarter continued with another UC touchdown, making it 46-29. GSC kept fighting as Hughes threw to Antwan Stewart on a 14-yard scoring pass. That made the scoreboard read 46-36 and Charleston would hold onto that for the win.
Hughes completed 30 of 53 passes for 327 yards. He threw three touchdowns and one interception. Stewart was the most successful receiver, catching 10 passes for 122 yards. Griffin grabbed nine catches for 59 yards and two scores. Murphy had eight passes for 112 yards. Joe Measdieu once again led GSC's ground game with 23 carries for 168 yards. Derek McRae ran the ball nine times for 22 yards and one score.
Glenville State's defense was led by Terry Reese with eight tackles. Matt Parker had seven tackles.
