Bobcats Scratched by UC 28-17

No. 11 West Virginia Wesleyan can no longer boast the title undefeated. The Bobcats lost their first game of the season at the University of Charleston 28-17.

WVWC took the opening kickoff into Charleston territory and quickly capitalized. Quarterback Adam Neugebauer hit Jon Meadows on a 25-yard play, on the first play from scrimmage, giving Wesleyan a 7-0 lead. That didn't last long as UC answered on its next possession, tying the game at 7-7.

In the second quarter, the Golden Eagles struck again, taking the lead 14-7. Another UC touchdown extended that lead to 21-7. Just before halftime, Wesleyan finally scored again with a Philip Warner field goal. Going into halftime, Charleston had the lead 21-10.

The Bobcats found the end zone again in the third quarter. Keith Dickens ran the ball in from five yards out, cutting into UC's lead 21-17.

The teams traded several possessions, but the Golden Eagles sealed the victory late in the fourth quarter with another score. Charleston won 28-18.

Six turnovers sealed Wesleyans' fate. Neugebauer went 31 of 49 for 375 yards and one score. Neugebauer threw an uncharacteristic five interceptions. Meadows caught six of the passes from Neugebauer to earn 100 yards, scoring one touchdown. T. J. Benners hauled in six catches for 116 yards. Jesse Robertson championed the Wesleyan defense with 10 tackles.

West Virginia Wesleyan is now 9-1, 6-1 in WVIAC play.

The Bobcats finish the season on the road, at Concord. The loss puts Wesleyan and Concord in a tie for first place in the WVIAC. Next Saturday's game will decide the 2011 conference champion.
