Morgantown and Bridgeport haven't necessarily been at the top of the food chain in high school girl's soccer over the past few years. For the Mohigans, it's been six years since they've appeared in the state tournament. Bridgeport on the other hand, is the first team from Harrison County to ever advance to final four weekend.
The two teams will meet this Friday in Beckley to determine which team gets a spot in the state title game. Morgantown is led by a standout junior who is coming off the game of her life, where she scored a hat-trick in the Mohigans' quarterfinal win over Preston.
"My grandma cried," Morgantown Midfielder Tyler Jordan said with a laugh. "She was so excited for me. Everyone was really excited for me and my teammates were like, 'Oh my gosh you got the hat trick; the first one all season.'"
Morgantown's first win of the 2011 season, ironically, came over the same Bridgeport Indians. The Mohigans delivered a 6-0 shutout. Jordan said her team has come a long way since that season opening victory and can't be anymore thrilled to be in this position.
"[We've come] really far," Jordan said. "Most of us have played together since we were 10, so we've been waiting for a chance like this. Last year we had all the people and everything. But, we just needed that little extra push."
The Bridgeport Lady Indians have gotten to this point thanks to outstanding play in front of the net from goalie Mariah Hall. In Bridgeport's quarterfinal victory over Washington, Hall came up with the final save in the final sudden death round of penalty kicks. Hall recalls every last moment of that win.
"I was freaking out and I had so much going through my head," Bridgeport goalie Mariah Hall said. "I just wanted to win the game for the girls and I knew it was down to me in order for us to win."
The match up offers a battle between the athletic bunch from Morgantown against the physically-natured squad from Bridgeport. Both teams have continued to grow since that first game, and Hall said regardless of the final score during the previous meeting, this one will be much different.
"The girls are really excited and they're all happy that we're in the final four. We just got to work harder to beat Morgantown. They are a tough team but I think we can pull through and beat them," said Hall.
