D&E Men Beat UPJ 3-1, Advance in WVIAC Soccer Tourney

The Davis & Elkins men's soccer team kicked off the 2011 WVIAC Men's Soccer Tournament with a win, Tuesday night. The Senators defeated Pitt-Johnstown in a match that was held at Buckhannon-Upshur High School.

The Senators put a goal on the board first in the 21st minute when Humberto Bertran headed the ball into and empty net.

The second half saw triple the scoring action starting with D&E's David Nuernberg slicing a free kick off the shoulder of a UPJ player in the wall. The ball bounced off the player and over the goalie's head into the net. That gave D&E a 2-0 lead in the 70th minute.

The Mountain Cats cut the lead back to just one goal when Zeke Buchta scored just six minutes later.

The Senators would seal their fate of another post season game in the 88th minute at Nuernberg found the back of the net again.

D&E had 28 shots (15 on the net) compared to just 8 for UPJ.

The Senators move on to the semifinals of the WVIAC tournament. D&E will travel to top seed Charleston on Thursday.
