FAIRMONT -
Heading into the final week of the regular season, Fairmont State was looking to go out with a bang. A victory over the Shepherd Rams would not only improve the Falcons overall record, but would also give them confidence heading into the off season.
Shepherd raced out to the early lead thanks to a field goal and a touchdown run from Kenny Williams. The Rams were looking good early on with a 10-0 lead towards the end of the first quarter.
However, Fairmont State would answer on the ensuing drive, as quarterback Logan Moore connected with Chris St. Hilaire for a touchdown. Soon after that, the Falcons would take the lead for the first time. Ryland Newman scored on a 72-yard punt return to give the Falcons a 14-10 lead.
But the Rams continued to fight, as Cooper delivered a strike in the corner of the end zone to Neal Hardie for the touchdown. The Rams took back the lead 17-14 right before halftime.
The story of the second half would prove to be much different, though. Fairmont State's Raynell Hall intercepted Cooper deep in Falcons territory, but the call was reversed due to a holding penalty on the Falcons. The Rams were given new life on the drive and Williams capped off another touchdown run to swing the momentum in the direction of the Shepherd, increasing their lead 24-14.
Shepherd would go on to add two more touchdowns late in the game to defeat Fairmont State 38-21. The Falcons end the 2011 season with a 7-4 overall record and 4-4 mark in conference play. With the win, Shepherd ends the regular season with a 9-2 overall record and 6-2 mark in the WVIAC.
