Fairmont Senior’s Nunan Inks with Akron

FAIRMONT -

High school girls basketball teams started practicing last Monday, Nov. 7. Boys teams hit the court for the first time Monday, Nov. 14.

This is also the time frame for early letter of intent signings. A local player inked her name with a Division I program Monday.

Fairmont Senior standout Katie Nunan signed to play for the University of Akron in Ohio. The senior verbally committed to the Zips earlier this year. Nunan will play either power or small forward.

Last season, as a junior, Nunan averaged a double-double for the Lady Polar Bears. She was a selection to the All-State Third Team.

Nunan had interest from several other D-I schools including WVU and Marshall. Fairmont State was also an option but Nunan said all it took was one look at the MAC school to know it was for her.

"They were heavily recruiting me and I went and visited the campus and it just felt right; like when you step on campus and when you get along with the coaching staff and you fit into the program," said Nunan of her decision to play for Akron. "And also, they have a good business school which is what I want to go into. So, that played a big role."

Nunan will make an official visit to Akron in December though she already knows that she wants to be part of this program that is on the rise. The Zips finished the 2010-2011 season with a 14-16 record. However, the year before that, Akron had the most successful year in school history.

Nunan also pointed out that the Zips play a fast paced style of basketball, exactly her type of game.
