Mohigans Use Running Game, Opportunistic Defense To Cruise To Semi-Finals

MORGANTOWN -

In week three, the Morgantown Mohigans were still establishing their identity after splitting their first two games in very different fashions, a blowout loss, followed by a blowout win.

In week three they went above .500 for the first time of the season with a 28-7 road win at Parkersburg South, but followed it up with a 33-0 shutout loss at Martinsburg the next week.

It may have taken them 13 weeks, but the Morgantown Mohigans have definitely arrived after their 45-22 win over Parkersburg South in the quarterfinals of the high school state tournament Friday night at Pony Lewis Field.

After blowing out a twelfth-seeded Musselman team in the first round 48-14, the Mohigans may not have expected to see the thirteenth-seeded Patriots, but an upset win in the first round over fourth-seeded Logan 51-8, gave the teams a rematch, with much more on the line.

The Mohigans came out on defense forcing a three-and-out, on the punt attempt, the snap was too high and the Patriots turned the ball over on downs deep in their own territory.

The very first play from scrimmage, sophomore Chazzy Thomas used a lead blocker and got into the end zone from 34 yards out to put the Mohigans up 6-0.

The Patriots began their second drive, but the Mohigan defense showed they've also improved. Kevin Minehart stripped the ball from the runners hands and teammate Adam Kovak jumped on the loose ball to give the Mohigans another offensive crack.

Down the field they drove, and capped off the long drive with a two-yard plunge from Alex Weidman putting them up 12-0.

The Patriots would come within five points when Jacob Douglass had a highlight-reel run to the end zone to cut it to 12-7, but that's when the Mohigans hit the gas pedal for good.

The Mohigans went on to win 45-22 and move on to the semi-finals of the state playoffs next weekend. They are just one win away from a trip to Wheeling to play for a state championship.
