WVIAC Basketball Preview: Fairmont State Women

FAIRMONT -

The Fairmont State women's basketball team started the season off right on Tuesday with a season-opening victory 72-61 over Point Park. Head Coach Steve McDonald commented that his team played hard and with purpose. That's how he wants the Lady Falcons to perform all year, playing the game with enthusiasm.

Coach Mac has 10 new players between freshman and transfers. There are just two returning starters in Kaitlin Snyder and Tiffany Nicholson but those two are very smart players will help the rest of the squad with growing pains.

Coach Mac said the FSU women are a very clichéd team because of the youth. It's one day at a time, one practice at a time, one game at a time. Coach Mac sees that as a good thing for his team because he thinks the step by step mentality takes pressure off the younger players.

One of the most interesting things about this Fairmont State team and something that will likely draw large crowds to Joe Retton Arena is that fans will see several recognizable names on the roster.

"We have eight or nine kids from the state of West Virginia, which we're very proud of," explained Coach McDonald. "We have six kids from Marion County, a young lady from Bridgeport. So, we love recruiting West Virginia kids and we think we can win at an extremely high level with West Virginia kids."
