HSFB Playoff Preview: Parkersburg South at Morgantown

Posted: Updated:
MORGANTOWN -

It's the "Elite Eight" of the 2011 West Virginia High School Football Playoffs. The fifth seeded Morgantown Mohigans and the 13th seeded Parkersburg South Patriots meet at Pony Lewis Field in Morgantown.

For Mohigan fans, this game may feel like déjà vu as Morgantown already beat the Patriots earlier this season in Parkersburg 28 to 7.

It's easy to look back and see how they won that game but that was in week three of the regular season and a lot has changed for both teams. Morgantown has vastly improved its offensive output, averaging 47 points per game since then.

Last week, in Morgantowns's 48-14 drubbing of Mussleman, the Mohigans' offense was almost unstoppable to the tune of 490 total yards.

While the Mohigans are churning along they have to remember that the Patriots have also made changes and will be a much more focused group especially since it's playoff time. All the talk of beating a team twice isn't something they are thinking about said Morgantown Head Coach John Bowers.

As for Parkersburg South, since its week three loss to the Mohigans, the Patriots have won five of eight games, It's the defense that has been stealing the show. In those five wins, they've allowed an average of less than eight points per game and are hoping that they can slow down the Mohigans just enough to turn this ball game into a defensive battle.

It's tough to beat the same team twice in a season but it's also a benefit because you are somewhat familiar with what they are going to throw at you.
