To this point in the 2011 high school football playoffs, Morgantown has only gone up against one opponent it hasn't seem before. That team is Musselmen, and the Mohigans dismantled the Applemen in the first round 48-14.
It was a rematch in round two against Parkersburg South. On Friday, Morgantown beat the Patriots 45-22.
So the Mohigans move on to face No.1 undefeated Martinsburg, another rematch from the regular season. In week four, Martinsburg blanked Morgantown 33-0. The Mohigans haven't lost a game since.
The Bulldogs seems to be haunting and taunting Morgantown. The Mohigans are even more familiar with this opponent in the post season than during the regular season. For the last three years, Martinsburg has been the team to knock the Mohigans out of the playoffs and end their season short of a state championship.
In 2010, The Bulldogs won 24-10 and a week later, won the class 'AAA' title. In 2009 it was a first round game that Martinsburg won 19-13.
Morgantown must make the trip to Martinsburg, with yet another state championship game birth on the line. The Mohigans chose a Saturday day game again this season, mostly because of the travel time.
Morgantown Head Coach John Bowers will be the first to say that Martinsburg is tough. The Bulldogs have given up just 62 points all season, proving that defense is king in the eastern panhandle. But don't underestimate Martinsburg's offense. Several returning starters dominate on that side of the ball.
Morgantown will take a team that's clicking on all cylinders to the panhandle and the Mohigans don't even need pay back as motivation to put it all on the line.
"Well, pay back, no. We want to get to Wheeling and win a championship and the only way that can happen is to beat Martinsburg," said Coach Bowers. "Revenge, that doesn't even factor into the equation. We're going to look at the film, see where their weaknesses are and there's not many. We'll try to exploit them just like they did to us. They took advantage of a couple areas that we were a little weak the first time we played and they beat us. So hopefully we can return the favor."
