Mohigans Ready to Take on Top Dog

Posted: Updated:
MORGANTOWN -

On Saturday looms the Morgantown Mohigans first road playoff game. They have the daunting task of beating No. 1 ranked and undefeated Martinsburg.

Morgantown is much improved from earlier in the season when these two teams met. Martinsburg won that game 33-0. Mostly, the line on both sides for the Mohigans has become the strength of the team.

Morgantown Head Coach John Bowers knows the Bulldogs are top dog for a reason, though.

"A lot of the time you'll see a team with a tremendous amount of athletes and they're kind of soft. Not Martinsburg," commented Coach Bowers. "They have a tremendous amount of athletes but they're tough guys too. They're athletic. They're strong. They're tough. They'll hit you. They're the total package."

These two teams are familiar with third-round playoff games. In this exact same scenario last year, Martinsburg ended Morgantown's season, then went on to win the Class "AAA" state title.

Martinsburg Head Coach David Walker thinks the familiarity is both an advantage and a disadvantage. He's glad his team has seen this opponent before, but he doesn't want the Bulldogs to get complacent because they won the first game.

The improved Morgantown line will have to stop several veterans on Martinsburg's roster, a lot of players who know what it's like to win a state championship.

The Mohigans may not be the favorite, but statistically, Morgantown has been in the semifinals of the high school football playoffs eight out of the last 10 years.

Coach Bowers said his team needs to limit errors to pull out an upset. Coach Walker said his squad needs to come prepared for a battle.

"It's hard to beat a good team once. It's even harder to beat them twice," said Coach Walker. "I think our kids will understand that Morgantown did some good things against us the first game and we popped off some big plays that made that separation. It was probably close than what the score indicated."

"We've given up big plays and its cost us. We threw a pick six and its cost us," remembered Coach Bowers. "We're going to have to play-it's impossible to play error free football but we're really going to have to limit our miscues against a team as talented and as well coached as Martinsburg is."
