FSU's McDonald Makes History with Coaching Win 220

FAIRMONT -

Fairmont State Women's Basketball Coach Steve McDonald doesn't really like to talk about anything besides his team. Coach Mac likes to stick to the subject of what the Lady Falcons are doing now and where they're headed in the future.

But it's time to talk about just coach.

On Thursday, Dec 1, 2011, Steve McDonald became the winningest women's basketball coach in Fairmont State history. The Lady Falcons notched an 86-72 victory over Ohio Valley, giving Coach Mac win 220. After 19 years of coaching at Fairmont, how does coach feel about the milestone?

"It makes me feel like we've had a lot of really good players, we have had great assistant coaches and I'm getting old," said McDonald.

It's hard to get Coach Mac to talk about himself, but his players have plenty of praise for their fearless leader.

"I'm really proud of him. This is my third year here and I've learned a lot from him on the court and off the court," said Fairmont State Guard Kaitlin Snyder. "He's a great Xs and Os coach. He's a great scouting coach as well. I feel like he's adapting well to the type of team that we have each and every year, in order to become a better coach for his players."

McDonald has been in the coaching game for 31 years. He admitted he could never have made it to this point in his career by himself.

"I think that every coach has to coach the way that they developed for themselves," said McDonald. "When you're young you try to emulate older coaches that you've seen on TV or you met or you played for, but we're really more of a reflection of our players and assistant coaches, quite honestly."

No matter his wins and losses, the most important thing is that Steve McDonald still loves coaching.

"When we played Point Park in the opening game of the season I told the Point Park coach I had butterflies and it was my 31st time to have an opening night and I still had butterflies. This is the greatest game on earth. It really is. Why wouldn't I get excited to get an opportunity? It's an absolute privilege to be a coach.

Coach Mac has two WVIAC tournament championships to go along with one regular season title.
