UPDATE
Virginia authorities said a gunman ambushed a campus police officer in a Virginia Tech parking lot Thursday and was later found dead nearby.
The slain officer had been making an unrelated traffic stop.
The body of the suspected killer was found in another parking lot. A gun was nearby.
The school locked down the campus and used a high-tech system to alert students and faculty.
The alert system was installed following a 2007 shooting on the campus that left 33 dead.

The following is a statement from the Virginia State Police:
Virginia State Police responded to Virginia Tech in reference to a shooting in reference to a Virginia Tech police officer being shot and killed while on a traffic stop at the Cassell Coliseum parking lot on Spring Road. Virginia Tech police requested that the Virginia State Police assume primary responsibility for the investigation of the incident.
The individual fled that crime scene in the direction of a second crime scene a quarter of a mile away, where a male body was found at that location with a gunshot wound.
The Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation out of Salem are currently at both crime scenes. Also, our tact team, canine units, and patrol are currently on the Virginia Tech campus assisting the Virginia Tech Police Department.
We are in the early stages of the investigation, and we don't have any additional details at this time.
The officer is a four-year veteran of the Virginia Tech Police Department and was assigned to patrol.

State police say the gunman who killed a police officer at Virginia Tech appears to have walked into a parking lot and shot the officer during a traffic stop.
Sgt. Robert Carpentieri says it appears that the shooter also was not in the car that was pulled over on Thursday.
The sergeant says another officer later spotted a second person in a parking lot who was alive at the time. That person later died.
Virginia Tech officials have said there is no longer a threat on campus and normal activities can resume.

Law enforcement officials have told the Associated Press that the Virginia Tech gunman is believed to be dead.

Two people have been confirmed killed on the campus of Virginia Tech Thursday.
The incident started with a traffic stop, according to a statement released by the university.
"Shortly after 12 p.m. today, a Virginia Tech Police officer stopped a vehicle on campus during a routine traffic stop in the Coliseum parking lot near McComas Hall.
"During the traffic stop. the officer was shot and killed. There were witnesses to this shooting.
"Witnesses reported to police the shooter fled on foot heading toward the Cage, a parking lot near Duck Pond Drive. At that parking lot, a second person was found. That person is also deceased.
"Several law enforcement agencies have responded to assist. Virginia State police has been requested to take lead in the investigation.
"Status of the shooter is unknown. The campus community should continue to shelter in place and visitors should not come to campus."

Virginia Tech's student newspaper reported via Twitter that a police officer was killed in a shooting on campus.
The Collegiate Times reported that the officer was killed in the Coliseum Lot near McComas Hall. The newspaper also reported that a second victim was possibly shot in the I-Lot on Plantation Road.
The suspect in the shootings is still at-large, the paper reported.
The university's Twitter feed reported only that a police officer was shot and that a potential second victim was reported at the Cage Lot.
The university advised all students to stay indoors and "secure in place."

Virginia Tech says gunshots have been reported on campus, and authorities are seeking a suspect, according to the Associated Press.
The university said in a Thursday post on Twitter that the shots were reported at the coliseum parking lot and that people should remain inside, the AP reported.
The suspect is described as a white male wearing gray sweat pants, gray hat with neon green brim, maroon hoodie and backpack.
