Webster County Hosts 17th Annual Wrestling Duels

Posted: Updated:

High school wrestlers from around the state gathered in Webster County this weekend for a two-day tournament.

A majority of the schools are AA, with some AAA schools sprinkled into the tournament as well. Friday's action consisted of ten teams, including local schools such as Lincoln, Buckhannon-Upshur and Lewis County. The tournament continues into Saturday with a 16-man bracket tournament.

Webster County has hosted the tournament since 1994, with teams coming from as far away as Clarksburg to Bluefield.

Highlanders head coach Marty Miller said the tournament attracted not only wrestlers to the event, but a large amount of fans as well.

"Typically the student body doesn't get to come in and watch it because there's so many people here, Miller said. "But this year the student body is going to get to come in and watch it. Most of our kids in high school don't know anything about wrestling. They think it's WWE coming off the ropes and stuff. So they're going to get to watch it this year and hopefully we'll get more kids out next year."

The Webster County community came out to support the tournament and were thrilled to host the large number of high schools throughout the state.

"We're really excited to host this tournament. This is the only event our school holds throughout the year, so it means a lot to not just our team, but to the fans and the rest of the student body too," Miller said.
