Since this time last year, we've seen several coaching changes at West Virginia Wesleyan College. Both basketball teams have brand new coaching staffs. Men's coach Jim Boon is a West Virginia native and happy to be back in his home state.
Eight games into his first season, Winfield native Jim Boone has led Wesleyan to a 5-3 record, including a win over nationally ranked Indiana, Pa. It sounds like the team is picking up his new system pretty well.
"Everything we're doing is completely different for our guys," commented Coach Boone. "It's been a process. You just don't take a player or a program and pop it in the microwave and 30 seconds later you're ready to go. It's our guys understanding our philosophy. Defensively building a culture that is embedded upon defense has been a process."
One example of the progress is the West Liberty game. Last season's blowout loss became a three-point nail biter this year.
"I think our guys are doing a great job," said Coach Boone of his new team. "I've been really impressed with their willingness and that's probably not even the best word, they're eagerness to learn and to get better. We've got a long way to go but we've really made some great strides, particularly here in the last couple of weeks."
Boone is familiar with the WVIAC, having played and coached at West Virginia State. The conference tournament has entered his mind, but only the very back of it.
"Well right now for us it's a day to day today process," said Coach Boone. "We're just trying to get better today than we were yesterday and if we can continue to do that and continue to improve each and everyday throughout the year then I'll really like where we'll be in February. I think we'll have a chance to be a really good basketball team."
