If you watch the video associated with this story, and I suggest you do, you might notice that the scene is a bit skewed from a normal basketball game. Elkins, wearing white, seems to have five players chasing down just two of the RCB players. The Eagles held an 11 point lead, but had only two players left to try and hold on for 1:30 seconds, or what must have felt like an eternity. Why just two left? The seven man JV roster was down to just two players remaining after five of the players fouled out. Head Coach Scott Davis still thought victory was possible, and had the perfect game plan for his freshman and junior to try and execute.
"I wrapped my arms around both of them and I just said 'All right, we're going to play a 1-1 zone' and they're laughing are you crazy coach? And I said yeah, just play the top and the bottom and on out of bounds plays, just take it out and throw it deep and hope for the best," Davis recalled.
"Every time they scored I had to take the ball out and I just threw it long," freshman Chaz Rodeheaver said.
"Chaz, the littlest guy on the court find me, 90 percent of the time he found me and we got the ball in," junior Trey Jenkins added.
"Once we got the ball in, Trey did most of the work, he just had to dribble through everybody," Rodeheaver added.
"My favorite thing is dribbling, so when I got the ball he said just dribble as much as you can, and I'm quick so I just ran around," Jenkins quipped.
The 11 point lead was cut to seven, but that's as close as the Tigers would get. Amazingly, the Eagles held on and while they didn't score, they did just enough to kill the clock and pull off one of the most astonishing victories that will serve as a proud memory for the rest of their lives.
"They were just pumped up, kids were going crazy an I told them, 20 years from now you're going to have a story to tell that you guys will remember for the rest of your lives," Davis said.
"I'll tell my children, my grandchildren, I'll tell everybody about it," Rodeheaver said.
"Forever, like I said, I don't play that much varsity but when something like that happens at the JV level, I'll remember that forever," Jenkins stated.
