Before the North Marion girls basketball team's three-peat as state champions, it was Morgantown that ruled the AAA girls basketball landscape. The Lady Mohigans are now coached by Adam Henkins, who served as an assistant under former Morgantown coach Andy Collins. Collins helped Morgantown earn state championships in 2005 and 2007. So if anyone understands how tough it is to win a title, it's Coach Henkins.
"I don't think our girls understand how hard it is to win a state championship," Coach Henkins said. "They look up there and see those state championships and just think since we're Morgantown High that we're going to win. A lot of hard word, lots of effort, a lot of focus, a lot of practice, a lot of sweat and tears were poured into those state championships and that's what we try to convey to our girls each and every day."
Olivia Naugle and Rachel Michael have spent their entire four-year careers under Coach Henkins, first at the junior varsity level and now varsity. Neither can say enough about what they've learned from him.
"He's been a great coach," senior Point Guard Olivia Naugle said. "He gets on us for all the little things and I think that's what is going to make us really good this year."
"Playing under Coach Henkins is really fun. I've learned a lot because the main goal is to just go out and have fun and always work hard. He really wants a lot of effort and that shows heart," senior Forward Rachel Michael said.
Every time the Lady Mohigans take the court for practice, Coach Henkins asks his girls one simple question.
"Do you want to be a part of those in 20 years when you come back in and show your kids? Hey, I was a member of that; I was a state champion at Morgantown high school in a AAA state championship," Henkins said.
