Growing up in West Virginia, you know the name Bowden. I might not have actually known why until I was in college, but I still knew the name.
Now 25-years-old and a sports media professional, Bobby isn't the first name I think of when I hear Bowden.
Terry Bowden has made moves all over college football. It was recently announced that he is the new Head Football Coach at Akron. That's a jump from NCAA Division II to Division I. Bowden spent the last three years at North Alabama. The past two years, Bowden's team played Glenville State, grabbing two victories over the Pioneers.
Of course before he was trekking back to West Virginia to play WVIAC teams, he held plenty of prestigious college football jobs. Terry Bowden played for WVU and started coaching as a graduate assistant at Florida State. At the age of 26, Bowden took over at Salem, becoming the nation's youngest head coach. While with the Tigers, he won two WVIAC championships. From Salem, Bowden moved to Akron then to Samford before landing at Auburn. Terry Bowden was successful at Auburn but ended up resigning and starting a broadcasting career. In 2008 he took the job at North Alabama and in three years with the Lions, Bowden led the team to three post season appearances.
So now it's a move to Akron, technically his second tenure with the Zips. It was great to know a good ole' West Virginia boy was across the sidelines when North Alabama visited The ‘Ville but a move to Division I might mean we could see him across the sidelines at Mountaineer Field. Obviously it's not my job to make up Division I college football schedules, but with history like Terry Bowden and the Bowden family have, anything is possible.
We Mountaineers always love to see one of our own come home.
