A family in Doddridge County lost everything on one of the most celebrated days of the year, Christmas Eve.
They lost their home, their clothes, family heirlooms--everything they owned.
But they didn't lose each other and they are thankful for that.
"Material we can replace, we can't replace each other," said Mindy Swiger, a mother of two.
"We were at my cousins and we had to come home because my house was on fire," said Tiffani Bonnell, 6.
Mindy Swiger has two little girls, ages 6 and 8. Both were upset because Santa's gifts were also victims of the fire.
"Because I lost all of my Christmas toys and even my karaoke machine," Bonnell said.
It's hard to explain what that feels like for a child who missed Santa Claus or a mother who no longer has a home for her children.
"Scared shocked. Didn't know what to do. Didn't know what we were gonna do. Wondering what we were going to do. Angry, upset...mad...yeah mad," Swiger said.
The house was not insured.
"It's hard to see the end when you don't even see the beginning. That's what makes it hard," Swiger said.
Making starting over all the more difficult. Thankfully, friends and family are helping pick up what insurance won't cover.
"Neighbors, family, friends, of course. They have been outstanding," Swiger said.
The family has reached out to the Red Cross and Salvation Army. They are grateful for that help, but they are still in need of money, clothes, and support. Ask them what they need the most and they will tell you it's to not be forgotten.
"A fund set up at the bank for anyone that wants to make monetary donations. Biggest thing, keep us in your thoughts and prayers. Every little bit helps," Swiger said.
The family set up a fund at West Union Bank. The fund is called "Bonnie Swiger for Mindy Swiger Fund." You can donate money to the fund at any West Union branch.
The family is also accepting any other donations. You can reach Mindy by calling 304-782-2576.
