The West Virginia Wesleyan men's basketball team has had to endure with quite a bit of change as of late. First, Jeff Price left the program to pursue another head coaching job elsewhere, bringing in Jim Boone as the new head coach this season. One senior has embraced the entire transition with ease.
Senior leadership at the point guard position is tough to find in college basketball. But the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats have found just that with Reggie Chambers, and first-year Head Coach Jim Boone said he's never seen anything quite like Chambers.
"Reggie was the first person that called me," Wesleyan Head Coach Jim Boone said. "He was outstanding as a leader, as someone who was ready to embrace our philosophy and our program. 'What can I do to help coach? How can I make this easier? How can I make your transition smoother?' I've been through this five or six times and I've never had a player do that."
Chambers' six assists per game leads the team. Throw in 12.5 points and his team-leading 281 minutes played this season, and you'll soon realize consistency on the court has not been a problem. But his life off the court has been anything but consistent.
"I really can adapt to anything. I've been to four high schools in four years. I've lived in Utah for a year. So it really wasn't a big change for me. I've been away from home before, so it wasn't really a big thing," Wesleyan Point Guard Reggie Chambers said.
"I came from a school where it was 12,000; here it's 1,800," Chambers said. "I was in a bigger city, Buckhannon is a smaller city. So I wouldn't really consider it a challenge."
Although his family sits over 1,000 miles away in Miami, he knows he created a new one right here in Buckhannon.
"I've met a lot of new people. I've got family, people that I consider my family. It's been a great experience," Chambers said.
