MVB Athlete of the Week: Lewis County's Elijah Hull

Wrestling may be the toughest sport for any athlete at the high school level, but don't take my word for it.

"If you want to be good you've got to lift weights," Lewis County wrestler Elijah Hull said. "You've got to do all the extra conditioning. Do some running in the summer and spring. Even during the season it's not a bad time to be running and doing some extra workouts."

Which is what makes the story behind Lewis County's Elijah Hull so much more compelling. Hull is not only a two-time state champion, but a national champion wrestler as well. Throw in the fact that he's a three-sport athlete, and Lewis County has themselves one of the top athletes in the entire state. Minutemen head coach Eddie Williams tends to agree.

"Elijah has been kind of special," Lewis County head coach Eddie Williams said. "I've had a couple state champions and he's a two-time state champion. You could see early on that Elijah had this little talent that you really don't coach as such. Again, he's one of the best we've ever had, if not the best we've had."

Being a three-sport athlete is no easy task. In fact, Elijah Hull plays football, baseball and of course wrestles for Lewis County. But the standout senior made his decision loud and clear. Wrestling is the sport that will take him to the next level.

"I've signed at Appalachian State already in North Carolina and that's where I'll be continuing my career next year," Hull said. "I went to some schools, checked some places out, really liked the atmosphere down there in North Carolina and we'll see what happens."

And as for his legacy at Lewis County?

"Hopefully somebody can come up through one of these days and break some of those records and set the tone I guess. As for now, I guess it's the state championships," Hull said with a smirk.
