Weather looking quiet if heading out New Year's Eve..precip well west and east of WV.
Cold air pushing into the region by Monday on gusty northwest winds.
This cold, northwest flow will produce some snow showers...
The North Atlantic Oscillation forecast to go negative through the middle of January, which means COLDER DAYS for WV!
A somewhat quiet and mild end to 2011, which echoes what we have been seeing for most of November and December. On Saturday, a departing weather disturbance could produce an early rain or snow shower, but for the most part, a dry day including good weather conditions if you are heading out on New Year's Eve. Highs look to reach the upper 40s.
On New Year's Day, south winds ahead of a strong cold front will push temperatures into the lower 50s. The front should push some rain showers in by late in the day. Then, some VERY cold air should arrive on Monday courtesy of northwest winds that will be quite gusty. Along with the cold air, scattered snow showers will be likely over our part of the state. Accumulations will be minor and mainly over the eastern mountains.
Highs Monday through Wednesday will only manage the upper 20s to lower 30s with overnight lows in the teens. Some single digits over the mountains can't be ruled out.
The second half of next week looks to be warmer and generally dry.
Happy 2012!
