WVIAC Basketball Making Noise Nationally

Posted: Updated:

The WVIAC women's race is turning out to be as close as it can be as the season continues to play out, but what's been kind of lost in those discussions is how well our local teams have been doing nationally.

There are 265 Division II women's basketball team across the country, and some of the best players in the country are playing in our backyard.

Of the top ten women leading the nation in scoring, three players from our area grace that list.

After this weekends games, West Virginia Wesleyan's Lydia Bridenbaugh moved up to third in the country with 22.3 points per game. Right behind her is Fairmont States Kaitlin Snyder with 22 points per game, and in ninth, Glenville States Tenisha Wilson netting 20.4 points per contest.

While there are plenty of great individuals, teams are also being recognized for accomplishments nationally. Glenville State and Bunky Harkleroad's upbeat offense paces the nation in points per game, averaging just over 97 points per contest.

Fairmont State may be having some issues in the win-loss column, but the Falcons are shooting the rock very well, they're fifth in the country in field goal percentage shooting 47.5 percent from the floor.

As for the Men, while only Alderson-Broaddus is in the discussion for a league championship at this point, three of our other teams are playing good enough basketball to stay right at the top with some of the best in the country.

Fairmont State is struggling to win games but for Steve Custis and Issac Thornton, they're having fantastic individual seasons.

Custis is eighth in the country in points scored per game averaging 23 a contest, while junior teammate Issac Thornton is 21st in the nation averaging 20.8 points an outing.

Those two are helping the team pace a majority of the country in scoring, as the Falcons as a whole are the 11th best team in scoring offense, averaging 86.6 points a game.

Another individual playing at an elite level is Glenville State Sophomore Kevin Gray. He's leading the country in 3-point field goals made per game with 3.8 a contest. He's made 34 triples thru nine games thus far.

West Virginia Wesleyan also garners a team honor, they are still adjusting to first year head coach Jim Boones defensive mindset, but the offense isn't struggling. They're eighth in the country in field goal percentage, shooting a fantastic 51.5 points per game.
