Most Fairmont State fans have grown accustomed to watching Steve Custis score for the Falcons. The senior star averages a conference best 22.5 points per game. But scoring isn't the only thing he brings to the table.
"That's how I was taught the game. My parents taught me to just leave it all on the court, so that's what I try and do every night. Rebound, steals, assists, score it; whatever I can do to help the team I try to do it," Fairmont State guard Steve Custis said.
Custis ranks second in steals and minutes played this season, and forget about leading the conference in scoring, the guard checks in at tenth in all of Division-II basketball in that same category.
But when it comes down to it, Steve Custis isn't concerned with the numbers, the accolades or the fanfare. He simply wants to lead his team the best way he can.
"I'm a vocal leader," Custis said. "Sometimes I don't show it, but they know what I mean when I get serious I guess. They look up to me a lot on the court. They expect me to do things and I expect them to help me out."
"He's been our leader for us all my years I've been here," Fairmont State junior Isaac Thornton said. "He just always does the right thing on and off the court. He's always positive. He's a player that you want to be around."
The Maryland-native will look to play professionally overseas when his career as a Falcon is over. But until then, his eyes are set on a WVIAC crown.
"I think this semester we'll turn it around and we'll be up at the top where we're supposed to be," Custis said with a smile.
