Deion Cunningham is a defender, a facilitator, and a scorer. That is why the two-sport athlete loves one sport much more than the other.
"I play football and basketball and I enjoy basketball more because you get to do a lot more things in it," said MVB Athlete of the Week Cunningham. "It's a lot more hands-on."
Cunningham starts at guard for University. He also plays wide receiver for the Hawks' football team. University Boys Basketball Head Coach Paul Ingle said his star player has seen the benefits of being a multi-sport athlete.
"He played varsity last year and it's funny because when I go back and review game film from last year, you can really see the growth. Not just physical growth -- much bigger and stronger -- but you can see the growth in his game in terms of his ball-handling, confidence and a little bit more leadership this year," said Coach Ingle.
Deion comes from an athletic family. His older brother Demetrius was a star athlete for the Hawks. His sister plays basketball for University and his younger brother is currently in junior high playing several sports. So when asked if he is worried about his brother catching up to him in the future, Deion simply responded:
"Yeah, a little bit," Cunningham replied with a smirk. "But I don't think he will."
Nothing like a good old family rivalry.
