The West Virginia Wesleyan football team capped off a memorable 2011 season a few months back. For this Bobcat football team, just because the season is over doesn't mean the work is done. This squad has much bigger goals in mind.
"Our program is about building men and the one thing we need to do is give back to our community," Wesleyan Head Football Coach Jonas Jackson said. "Our elders are so important. They're so precious and so special. So we just want them to know that we're here for them and we love them."
"To give back to your community and to reach out to the elderly that can't get to the ball games; I certainly appreciate that. People are people, I don't care what age they are. They're still people and they enjoy it," Restorative Nurse Alice Wilkinson said.
Several West Virginia Wesleyan football players took a trip to the Mansfield Place Nursing Home in Philippi. For linebackers coach Mike Lorentz, the experience reached a personal level. Mike's father is a resident there.
"It made him feel very good about himself and also the son he raised. He's a big fan of football, always has," Lorentz said. "He has met the coaches before and today he got to meet the players. It shows what type of character and what type of morals and values they have."
One Wesleyan player even got a bit of advice for life after football.
"I'll sit down and talk with my pap about the Marines," junior Linebacker Jake Leninsky said. "I had a nice talk with somebody about the Marines. He explained how he went all over the world and it's something I want to do so it's nice to talk to somebody about it."
"Mansfield Place thanks for having us, we appreciate it. Thank you so much. We want to see you guys here again when we come back, every single one of you. Thank you for having us," Offensive Line Coach Roy Rodriguez said.
