It's good to be Courtney Small. She's a three-year starter for Bridgeport, the Lady Indians are ranked third in the state and a lot of the Tribe's success is thanks to her three-point shooting.
"I definitely feel like that's the strongest part of my game," admitted Small. "It's one of the main things I've worked on from an early age. I felt like shooting was my thing."
Shooting is probably her thing because for the last six years, Small has played basketball year-round, non-stop. Bridgeport Head Coach Dave Marshall has a different view of Small's abilities.
"Well obviously shooting is something that the general public can see from the outside, but what she does that a lot of folks, unless they know a lot about basketball, won't understand is how much she's progressed as a defensive player," commented Coach Marshall. "I just complimented her on that before a big game the other day. Just how impressed I am because she kind of struggled with that early in her career, being a good defensive player and she's been someone we'll put on one of their better players now and we feel real comfortable about that."
Small has hit 45 threes in her senior season and is on pace to set a new Harrison County record. Another nice accolade in her mind? A state championship.
"We definitely have a chance to make it back to states and I feel like we can make a run at states too," said Small. "A lot of it just depends on where we want to take it. We can go as far as we want to."
Courtney and the Lady Indians have local support, even stemming from last year. After beating Bridgeport in the semifinals at the state tournament, three-time state champion North Marion Head Coach Mike Parrish said Bridgeport would be his pick to win it, this season.
