It's nice to see local kids succeed at the college level. It's even better if they surpass that.
East Fairmont students greeted EFHS graduate David Carpenter with a round of applause as Assistant Principal Mary Lynn Westfall introduced Carpenter to a packed auditorium. The students were probably more excited that he's a former Bee, than the fact that Carpenter is a Major League Baseball pitcher for the Houston Astros.
It was Carpenter's first trip back to East Fairmont since he graduated. He spoke about his time as a Bee, then playing at WVU before being drafted. Carpenter's message was based on goal setting, hard work and determination.
Carpenter is enjoying time off before spring training picks up in late February in Florida.
Carpenter said he's happy to pass on his words of wisdom.
"You know it's just nice to get an opportunity to come back and speak to the students and kind of give back because I sat in the same seats they're going to be sitting in, get a chance to listen to somebody that has had some success after high school, after college and hopefully I can give them some type of information that will help them better their career choice, their path, something along those lines."
The Astros recently traded their go-to closer and Carpenter is now in the running for the job. Click on the "web extra" video to hear his thoughts on the opportunity.
