WVIAC Spotlight: D&E Women's Basketball Team No Longer Conference Cellar-Dweller

ELKINS -

It's been ten years since the Lady Senators have had a winning record in WVIAC play.

Four years ago, Jason Asbell took over and knew that the program needed to re-invent itself, using toughness and defense.

After going 16-46 over his first three years, it appeared that it may not have been working.

Until now.

Davis & Elkins finds itself just two games out from a conference title and for the first time in years, it can finally put the past behind them.

"We don't focus on what happened last year. We talk about taking it one game at a time. We started out 2-0 and I think that the confidence and the fact that the results came, we just built on that," Senators head coach Jason Asbell said.

"We all had to come back with a different attitude and we knew that so, everybody came back with a different attitude and I guess it's showing now," senior Victoria Lyles added.

With only two seniors on the roster the pieces are in place not only for a run now, but in the future as well.

The program is becoming self-sufficient and as Asbell and the team continue to grow together the belief that they can hang with the best in the conference, will only become stronger.

"We don't take winning for granted because we know we've had some tough times but at the same time we're always working for the next game, we're always working to get better, that's what I just told them in the locker room, but it's nice to look at the standings in the West Virginia conference and not have to look at the bottom to see your name. We're doing good things and we're proud of that," Asbell added.

The next few weeks will most likely determine how the Senators fare in the conference race, but even if a regular season championship isn't in the cards for this season, there's still the conference tournament, a championship that these seniors would cherish.

"It would mean everything especially coming from the beginning and not winning to many games and now we're seeing that we have an opportunity to win the championship and go all the way," Lyles added.
