Reassessment Issues Continue in Monongalia County

Posted: Updated:

--Update--

Monongalia County residents who were able to schedule an appeal appointment go before commissioners and the assessor starting Tuesday.

Everyday of the week for the majority of the day the appointments are slated in 15 minute increments.

To keep things moving they ask you bring as much information as you can.

The board of review and equalization will have to verify and validate each appeal.

--Update--

As February approaches the Monongalia County Commissioners prepare for a month booked with appeals to the reassessments.

One option is currently in the works as an attorney prepares to file paperwork extending the appeal deadline past February.

Budgets, levies, circuit court and other deadlines would all be effected.

The second option is to determine key discrepancies in the reappraisals that can be applied across the board.

Third the county commission could refuse to certify it.

"And as we analyze those appeals as we go along, there will be some point because I know how to do it, there will be some point, some juncture that we will be able to make large adjustments," said Monongalia County Commissioner Eldon Callen.

Commission Callen said there will not be a clear answer until several days into the appeals hearings

--Original Story--

The Monongalia County Commission said it is unable to schedule more than 1,400 property owners who want to appeal their reassessments and the list gets longer every day.

The problem is that the Board of Equalization and Review can only schedule appeals in the month of February.

Commission now must determine how it will hear each case because it must give each taxpayer a full, fair and equitable hearing to meet the standard of due process.

Commission is considering extending the hearing period into March and April and is consulting with an outside attorney.

The hearings will begin on Tuesday, Jan. 31.
